Egyptomania narratives or motifs
In 2022, Tears of Themis released a limited event, called “Secrets of the Tomb”, in which the main cast travels to a desert land called “Khaimit”, a term that closely resembles Kemet, the Egyptian name for Egypt. The events contain different phases that allude to both orientalist portrayals of modern Egypt (such as the museum or the bazaar/market) and ancient Egypt (such as the tomb of Ita or the Pyramid-like building called “Shadows of the Resurrection”). In these ancient Egyptian locations, players can explore an Egyptianising tomb and pyramid to dig up materials and beat challenges to earn rewards for the event. While exploring these locations, players can get both buffs and debuffs that affect their gameplay, and they all allude to Egyptian gods and their functions (such as “Isis’ Protection”, “Osiris’ Judgement”, “Nun’s Abyss”, “Ptah’s Artistry”, or “Apophis’ destruction”).
The main cast is also depicted in the exclusive event-cards with a mixture of Egyptianising and orientalising outfits. They are all dressed in light clothes made of white and black linen and wear golden bracelets and pectorals. Some outfits include Egyptian motifs such as the ankh symbol or the Eye of Horus, and some characters are even shown wearing an Anubis mask. Finally, in the background of these illustrations, buildings and architectural elements recalling ancient Egypt can be distinguished, such as obelisks, colorful pylons, canopic jars, and papyrus-like columns.
Egyptianising motifs, such as the heads of the gods Anubis and Bastet, the scarab, or the Eye of Horus, are constantly depicted in the event as icons or as rewards that the player can get in exchange for farming.
