Summary
Twenty-four-year-old British painter Cleo has escaped from England to New York and is still finding her place in the sleepless city when, a few months before her student visa ends, she meets Frank. Twenty years older and a self-made success, Frank's life is full of all the excesses Cleo's lacks. He offers her the chance to be happy, the freedom to paint, and the opportunity to apply for a Green Card. But their impulsive marriage irreversibly changes both their lives, and the lives of those close to them, in ways they never could've predicted.
Egyptomania narratives or motifs
In this novel from 2022, Egyptomania is a punctual motif, despite the appearance in the title of the name of Queen Cleopatra. Cleo and Frank, the main characters, meet in the lift of a New York building leaving a New Year’s Eve party. She decides to finish the night and go home, he has to buy ice to continue. On the way together through the city streets, their story of love and heartbreak begins. She is Cleo, like Cleopatra, the downfall of men, as Frank tells her; he is Frank, like Frankenstein, creator of monsters, as she tells him. From these first pages, their long names are only used in moments of intimacy between the couple, as in the moment when Cleo tries to convince Frank to give up alcohol during a trip to Rome:

Wine is the least interesting thing about Rome, and about you, she said.
Frank gave her a sincere smile.
Thank you Cleopatra.
You’re welcome, Frankenstein.

Cleo recalls their first Halloween party together, where they dressed up as their "dark twin brothers," Cleopatra and Frankenstein. Cleo then describes how she wore a long dark wig and ostensible eyeliner, replicating the iconic image of Cleopatra in Hollywood cinema.
