Egyptomania narratives or motifs
In this film, ancient Egypt simply becomes a background motif that serves to characterise the protagonists’ journey through different parts of New York. Woody Allen’s fascination with this city is well known, and he frequently uses it as a backdrop for his films, making some of its locations emblematic for the viewer, as is the case in Manhattan (1979).
In A Rainy Day in New York, Gatsby (played by Timothée Chamalet) and Chan (Selena Gomez) stroll through the city while Gatsby waits for a call from his girlfriend, the angelic Ashleigh (Elle Fanning). Gatsby and Chan decide to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), where they visit the Egyptian antiquities section. The protagonists talk about how crazy the Egyptians were to invest all their money in the afterlife, as they enter the hall of Pharaohs’ sculptures (MET Gallery 115).
Gatsby had accompanied Ashleigh to her professional engagements in New York without notifying his relatives in the city. While in the tomb in the MET (mastaba tomb of Perneb, Old Kingdom), he realizes his aunt and uncle are in the very same room. He then wanders through the tomb rooms, trying to hide, but is finally discovered. He mentions very briefly Tutankhamon inside the tomb.
Ancient Egypt is, therefore, a postcard that is integrated into the New York adventure that Allen depicts in this film. Nothing more than that.
